Hilong Visits South China Sea to Inspect Flammable Ice Project

      Date 2017-07-06

(July 6, 2017, Shanghai) On June 30, 2017, Hilong President Zhang Jun, Executive President Wang Tao, and their entourage went to the Shenhu Area of the South China Sea to inspect the flammable ice project.

During the inspection, Hilong, China Geological Survey (CGS), the owner of the flammable ice mining project, and general contractor CNPC Offshore Engineering Company Limited held an in-depth discussion on the cooperation of flammable ice development equipment, technical services, and other aspects.

The Hilong inspection team also listened to CNPC Offshore Engineering Company’s special presentation on flammable ice mining technology and had a field visit to understand the drilling technology and equipment of “Blue Whale No. 1”, the world’s largest offshore drilling platform.

Hilong President Zhang Jun noted that Hilong has been committed to providing the world’s leading equipment and service for energy development and actively explores technology development directions of new energy. Mr. Zhang also noted that “this inspection will lay a solid foundation for Hilong’s development of equipment and technical services in the flammable ice development field”.

According to a report from Xinhua News Agency Beijing as of June 21, China has been conducting trial mining of flammable ice in the South China Sea for up to six weeks, with cumulative output of over 230,000 cubic meters. During this time, China’s flammable ice trial mining works achieved breakthroughs beyond expectations despite Typhoon Merbok. Trial mining in the Shenhu Area of the South China Sea has been organized by CGS.

Flammable ice, namely, natural gas hydrate, appears like ice but contains 80%-99.9% methane which is flammable. It is considered one of the best alternative sources of energy for the future of mankind. Burning 1 cubic meter of flammable ice can release 164 cubic meters of methane gas.
